For numerous tarot enthusiasts, the court cards pose one of the most intricate challenges to truly comprehend.
The Major Arcana often garners significant attention, with its vast and profound archetypes presenting a wealth of exploration and contemplation. Meanwhile, the minor pips provide enchanting narrative arcs within their respective suits, imbued with daily wisdom and insight.
Yet the court cards, with their expressive faces, elemental forces, and uniquely human characteristics, can sometimes seem elusive, perplexing, or even disconcerting.
What should one make of these sixteen cards, which seem to address experience, insight, balance, discovery, resourcefulness, expansion, adventure, creativity, leadership, boundaries, and much more simultaneously? How can we engage with them effectively, and how can we tap into their abilities for our own endeavors?
How should we approach these sixteen cards, which appear to encapsulate experience, insight, balance, discovery, resourcefulness, expansion, adventure, creativity, leadership, boundaries, and even more simultaneously? How might we effectively collaborate with them and channel their talents to serve our own aims?
I've initiated an Instagram series titled #OrderInTheCourt, dedicated to creating a space to delve into these very concepts. It invites readers to share their preferred keywords, interpretations, insights, and personal experiences with these intriguing cards.
However, occasionally it can be beneficial to take your own deck and immerse yourself in the cards individually, allowing you to develop personal insights on how to harness their energy. Keeping this in mind, I've crafted Tarot spreads for each of the four categories of court cards — and today, we'll start with the Pages.
Understanding the Pages in Tarot
Pages are frequently referred to as students, children, explorers, seekers, and messengers, often depicted as the court's youngest and most inexperienced members.
These are the novices, approaching the element with fresh eyes and an open mind. They don’t carry preconceived notions or fixed expectations about what their journeys or inquiries might reveal. Instead, Pages dive into their new ideas, inspirations, relationships, or long-term plans with enthusiasm, ready to explore, question, and leave their unique imprint.
I perceive an abundance of joyful curiosity in these figures, an eagerness to learn and play, to understand, build personal connections, and even embrace their own mistakes. Pages aren't preoccupied with perfection on the first attempt and remain unfazed by traditional ways. Instead, they follow their instincts and intuition, heeding the calls of their hearts and minds, allowing themselves to experiment and discover new possibilities.
When we merge this energy with the four distinct suits or elements, we can delve deeper into how these forces intertwine and interact with one another.
The Page of Wands
The Page of Wands embodies an innate sense of vibrant desire and potent passion, trusting their instincts and boldly stepping into new adventures.
The Page of Swords
The Page of Swords offers insight, keen observation, and a profound yearning to discover the truth, questioning every finding and seeking answers through any necessary methods.
The Page of Cups
The Page of Cups cradles their heart within their hands, yearning to see and be seen, expressing vulnerability and tenderness alongside deep intuition and a sense of wonder for the world.
The Page of Pentacles
The Page of Pentacles engages with the world in a sensual and tangible manner, exploring possibilities, experimenting with uncharted paths, and determining which journey seems to lead toward a meaningful legacy.
Each of these figures infuses their element with joy, wonder, and a spirit of discovery. When they emerge in readings, Pages often herald a new opportunity or beginning, a chance that is presenting itself, an open door waiting for us to step through.
To tap into your inner Page, take your favorite tarot deck and set aside all four Pages. Arrange them in front of you and spend some time with them collectively, then explore each one individually.
What do these cards awaken and encourage within you? In what ways can they inspire, challenge, question, and uncover truths? Where might they lead if you dared to follow? What traits do these Pages have in common, and where do they diverge? If two of these Pages were engaged in a dialogue, what subjects might they discuss?
Discover: Which Tarot Suit Aligns with Your Personality?
If you've been working with the cards for some time, you may find yourself particularly drawn to a specific Page—one that appears when you need a surge of courage, motivation, openness, or desire. Conversely, there might be a Page that feels less comfortable for you, one that leaves you uncertain about how to engage with it.
Place these Pages side by side and reflect on their similarities. Why does one resonate with you more than the other?
If you wish, take some time to journal about each of these cards or all four Pages, and contemplate how your inherent impulses, hesitations, and interests are echoed in these figures.
Can you find a reflection of yourself in any of these Pages?
Set the Pages aside from your deck while you draw cards for this spread. If you wish, position them at the top of your reading area as a reminder to embrace a spirit of discovery, adventure, curiosity, and open-mindedness.
A Tarot Spread to Embark on a Journey of Seeking
Card One: A Matter to Question. What have you accepted without scrutiny? Where might you be assuming something that deserves deeper exploration?
Card Two: An Area to Investigate. What are you prepared to delve into more thoroughly? Where can you gain knowledge, and what would support that educational journey?
Card Three: A Quest to Undertake. What are you yearning for? What desire has been simmering within you? Has something been preventing you from chasing this aspiration?
Card Four: An Experience to Try. What can you do at this moment to broaden your perspective or readiness for new adventures? Where can you take a leap of faith?
I strongly suggest journaling through each of these prompts alongside your spread.
Where are the doors opening, and what do you need to step through them with confidence? What sparks your curiosity, eager to be questioned or explored? How do new opportunities resonate in your body, and what does your heart yearn for? What brings you a sense of safety, and where have you felt constrained or suppressed? Where are you prepared to embrace a spirit of adventure?
What lessons have the Pages imparted to you in the past, and where might they be guiding you now?
